Katherine and Rhys - A Love Story in Lace and Lights

Katherine and Rhys - A Love Story in Lace and Lights

Posted by Vanessa Ford on

We absolutely love when a bride’s story is as breathtaking as her gown, and Katherine and Rhys gave us all the feels. From a serendipitous reunion to a heartfelt wedding day at Coolibah Downs Private Estate, every detail was filled with love, laughter, and personal touches.

Katherine and Rhys first met in 2017 through mutual friends. Timing wasn’t quite right then, but the universe had other plans. They reconnected in March 2019 over coffee and from that day on, they’ve never spent a day apart.

“I never forgot his face, and apparently, he didn’t forget mine. He always said I looked like Alanis Morissette.”

A true 90s-love-song kind of beginning.

On the last morning of their 2024 New Year’s cruise, as the ship pulled into port and the sun rose over the water, Rhys proposed. He had carried the ring in his pocket the entire trip, waiting for a moment that felt perfectly “like us.” Katherine said yes in a sunrise haze of joy and certainty.

For Katherine, marriage is rooted in the love she witnessed growing up: lasting partnerships of 15, 30, even 60 years. The kind of partnership where you co-captain through life’s storms and sunshine.

“To have unconditional love, support and your soulmate to enjoy life’s imperfections and perfections with. We always say we'd go faster alone but further together.”

Like the couple, Coolibah Downs Private Estate was love at first sight. After touring two other venues that didn’t feel quite right, Katherine stepped onto the grounds at Coolibah and immediately cried from joy. From the romantic chapel and fairy-lit marquee to the golf buggy rides (a big bonus for this golf-loving couple!), it was a perfect match.

Even Rhys looked at her and said, “Yep, this is the one. How much?”

Surrounded by their immediate families, Katherine and Rhys celebrated with the people who supported them through every step of life, including friends who still travelled for tattoos with Rhys even after their move from NSW. Their guest list was full of heart, loyalty, and deep connection.

Katherine came to When Freddie met Lilly seeking something timeless, Celtic, and elegant. The Havier lace gown with a capelet back detail was the one. It honoured both their heritages while staying true to her classic style.

“My gown fit so well with both of our heritage, tradition and personality. The capelet was the cherry on top.”

And it wasn’t just about the dress; it was about the experience. From heartfelt consultations with Vanessa to sneaking in cuddles with Coco and Buster (WFML's furry mascots), her bridal journey was as meaningful as the wedding itself. She described the WFML experience as warm, personal, and empowering; even after trying on many gowns, the team helped her feel centred and confident.

“Vanessa made every consultation feel like catching up with a friend,” Katherine said.

Like Katherine, Rhys also had a clear vision: a double-breasted coat with James Bond vibes. He’s all about old-school elegance and didn’t need a second opinion, he knew exactly what suited him.

From red wine tones and soft olive greenery to silk florals that last forever, the styling was earthy, elegant, and winter-ready. Katheryn’s bouquet by @thebridalcollectiveau was rich with reds and eucalyptus, while the bridesmaids’ coffee-toned arrangements contrasted beautifully.

There were personal touches everywhere. Their whole relationship is built on small, intentional gestures and their wedding day was no exception. From wearing Rhys’ grandmother’s pearl necklace to arranging his favourite snacks and suit on the big day. And perhaps the most meaningful of all: having both their grandmothers as witnesses. The couple considers their grandmothers the matriarchs and marriage mentors of their families; living proof of what love and partnership look like.

The best advice Katherine received?

“Slow down and enjoy the process.”

Weddings are intense, especially when you’re doing the planning yourself, so celebrating the small wins and staying flexible is key.

Katheryn’s tips for Future Brides:

  • Wear a lip stain, not lipstick
  • Use a wrist strap for your train
  • Feed your vendors
  • Eat your cake
  • And make time to reconnect with your husband at the end of the night

“Have one last dance together, just you two. It brings everything back to where it all started.”

After the music faded and the guests went home, Katherine and Rhys sat in their wedding outfits, shared a quiet cup of tea, and soaked it all in. A moment of calm and connection that perfectly captured their relationship.

Katherine, we adored being part of your journey and helping you find the gown that felt like you. Thank you for trusting When Freddie met Lilly. We wish you and Rhys a lifetime of love, laughter, and beautiful quiet moments in between.

Love, The WFML Team x
