A Wedding Story: Polka Dots, Fireball, and a Touch of Magic
When you meet someone at a folk festival, you can't help but feel like it's destiny. That was certainly the case for me and my husband, Timothy. We first crossed paths at the Woodford Folk Festival in 2018, but it wasn’t until December 29, 2018, that we had our real "meet-cute" moment at the Letter Shoppe. From there, things blossomed quickly. We spent our first few dates in Brisbane after the festival, including a memorable weekend at The Point Hotel. It was at that very hotel where we would later stay on our wedding night. Funny how life works, right?
The Proposal: A Sunset to Remember
Fast forward four years, and it was my favourite day of the year — New Year’s Eve. It was also exactly four years since we’d met. We were camping on Stradbroke Island, enjoying the sunset, when Timothy held me in his arms and proposed. The sky was just beginning to twinkle with stars, and in the distance, fireworks erupted over the beach. We joke that he timed it perfectly, but honestly, it was magical. We chose my engagement ring together— a marquise diamond set in platinum, and after the New Year, we told our loved ones. What Marriage Means to Me
Marriage is such a deeply personal thing, and I struggle to find the words to express just how much it means to me. But if I had to, I’d say it’s about being a team. It’s about being there for each other, witnessing each other’s lives, and growing together. We’re partners, lovers, best friends, and family all rolled into one.Choosing the Perfect Venues
When it came to picking a venue for the wedding, the couple had two places that were particularly meaningful to them. The reception venue was one they’d visited together during the early days of dating. The heritage function rooms were stunning, and it just felt like the right choice. It was also reasonably priced, which always helps!
For the ceremony, they chose the iconic Story Bridge. It’s where they walked together on their second date, and shortly after the engagement, they climbed it together. So, it felt only fitting that the couple tied the knot underneath it, on the pier with just a handful of closest friends and family. The celebrant was an old friend and someone who had also officiated my best friends' wedding. It was so special to have someone we both trusted and loved leading the ceremony.
Family and Keepsakes
One of the most emotional parts of the day was wearing jewellery from both of Laura’s grandmothers. Both of them had sadly passed away, but she wanted to honor them in a very personal way. Their photos were tucked into the bouquet, and Laura’s middle name is actually a blend of their names. Her Italian grandmother raised her —she was the closest thing Laura had ever had to a mother. Having her with me, even in spirit, made the day feel complete.
Finding My Dream Gown
I had a vision for my wedding dress, and it was all about polka dots. I was obsessed with the idea! My lovely sister-in-law booked me an appointment at When Freddie Met Lilly, and that one appointment turned out to be all I needed. With the help of Vanessa and Camilla, I designed the bespoke gown of my dreams. It had sparkly polka dots, pockets (hello, functionality!), and it just felt so me. I wish I could wear it every day!
A Little Touch of Humor
As for Timothy’s wedding attire, I let him take the reins. I simply told him I liked him in dark green, and he nailed it. He also added a playful touch—inside his suit, the lining was decorated with vintage portraits of dogs. We’re both huge dog lovers, so it was a sweet and funny detail that made us smile.
Small, Sweet Gestures
Keeping things simple the couples opted for a small, intimate ceremony, but there were a few little touches that made the day even more special. Before walking down the aisle, Timothy surprised Laura with the bouquet, following Italian tradition. It was a beautiful moment—a quiet exchange just before the whirlwind of the ceremony began. As and to add even more sentimentality, they did a cheeky shot of Fireball together to calm the nerves!
We also exchanged gifts. He got me a pair of stunning earrings to wear on the day, and I gave him a watch with a personal engraving. It was our way of marking the occasion with something meaningful to each other.
Styling Our Wedding
When it came to the décor, I wanted something that felt fun and retro with a touch of whimsy. We went for a cocktail party vibe with moody lighting, cute bud vases, and lots of candles. The tables were sprinkled with little gold chocolate hearts, like confetti, and Julie Sager from A&T Blooms truly brought my vision to life. She knew exactly what I wanted and went above and beyond, filling the space with the most gorgeous seasonal florals. My bouquet had chamomile for my Nonna and lily of the valley, which holds personal significance to me. The flowers were simply perfect.
A Fun Touch for Our Guests
The couple wanted their guests to feel engaged and connected. Creating little name badges for everyone, each with a note on how they knew the bride and groom. It was such a fun icebreaker! Plus, they had a giant crossword puzzle for guests to solve throughout the evening, all about their relationship. It was a hit!
Final Thoughts: Make It Your Own
The most important advice I can give to anyone planning their wedding is to remember that it’s your day—do it your way. There will always be external pressures or expectations, but at the end of the day, this celebration is about you and your partner and your unique journey together.
Looking back on our wedding day, I can say with certainty that it was everything I hoped for and more. There were so many personal touches, meaningful moments, and laughter-filled memories. And the best part? We did it together, exactly the way we wanted. The day was ours, and that’s what made it perfect.
We couldn’t be happier for the newlywed couple. The personal touches are what truly make a wedding day sing and at When Freddie Met Lilly it is what we strive to create. Your visions can come to life just like Laura’s. Congratulations once again xx
